Day 6: Conversational Prayer
Scripture Reading: Luke 11:1–13
Key Verse:
"So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." — Luke 11:9
Devotional
Prayer is one of the most familiar practices in the Christian life, yet it can also feel like one of the most intimidating. Many believers wonder if they are praying correctly, saying enough, or using the right words. But when Jesus' disciples asked Him, "Lord, teach us to pray," they weren't asking for a formula as much as they were asking to learn the kind of relationship with the Father they saw in Him.
Jesus responds by giving them what we often call the Lord's Prayer. It is not merely a prayer to recite but a pattern that shapes how we approach God. We begin by recognizing who He is: our loving Father. We worship His holy name, submit ourselves to His kingdom and His will, bring our daily needs before Him, confess our sins, extend forgiveness to others, and ask for His protection and guidance.
This prayer reminds us that God is interested in every part of our lives. He cares about our spiritual growth, our relationships, our daily needs, and our future. Nothing is too small or too great to bring before Him.
Then Jesus continues on to the story of a man who boldly knocks on his friend's door at midnight asking for bread. The point is not that God is reluctant and must be persuaded to answer. In fact, Jesus makes the opposite point. If an imperfect friend will eventually respond to persistence, how much more will our perfectly loving Heavenly Father gladly respond to His children. After all, a child would certainly be the only person permitted to wake the King in the middle of the night to ask for a snack. The NIV states it powerfully (v 8.): Because of your “shameless audacity”… There is nothing more shameless or audacious than a child who knows they are fully loved and perfectly safe. They aren’t afraid to ask for anything! And often won’t give up until their request is granted. We are invited to come with that confidence, not because we deserve His attention, but because of His goodness. What if you and I began to pray with shameless audacity?
That is why Jesus says, "Ask...seek...knock." These words describe an ongoing lifestyle of prayer. Prayer is not reserved for emergencies or special occasions. It is an open conversation with God that continues throughout the day. We speak to Him in moments of joy, confusion, gratitude, temptation, celebration, and sorrow. We listen as He speaks through His Word and His Spirit. Over time, prayer becomes less like a scheduled appointment and more like walking with a close friend.
Jesus concludes by reminding us that our Father delights in giving good gifts to His children, and the greatest gift He gives is the Holy Spirit. Often, we come to prayer asking God to change our circumstances. Sometimes He does. But even when He doesn't change the situation immediately, He always offers His presence. Through the Holy Spirit, God gives us wisdom, peace, strength, comfort, and everything we need to faithfully follow Him.
The holy habit of conversational prayer is not about perfect words or polished speeches. Children don’t try to put on airs when they talk to their father. They simply talk to Him. That’s why we always ask our students, “What is prayer?” And they answer, “Talking to God.” Yes, we approach with honor and respect, but because of Jesus we can approach boldly and freely. Simply having a conversation with out Father who loves to hear from His children and growing in continual dependence on Him. The more we practice talking with Him throughout the day and listening for His response, the more we discover that He is always near, always listening, and always faithful.
Prayer Prompts
Thank God that you can approach Him confidently as your loving Father.
Pray for His kingdom to come and His will to be done in your life.
Bring your daily needs and concerns before Him, trusting Him to provide.
Confess any sin the Holy Spirit brings to mind and ask for a heart that freely forgives others.
Ask God to help you develop the habit of talking with Him, and listening for His response throughout the day.
Journaling Questions
What keeps me from talking with God and listening for Him throughout my day?
Which part of Jesus' pattern for prayer comes most naturally to me? Which part do I often neglect?
How have I seen God faithfully answer prayer in the past?
What need or burden do I need to entrust to my Heavenly Father today?
What would change if I viewed prayer as an ongoing conversation instead of a religious obligation?
Challenge for the Day
Practice conversational prayer today by intentionally inviting God into your ordinary moments.
Throughout the day:
Begin your morning by praying through the Lord's Prayer slowly, reflecting on each phrase.
Take a moment to engage in conversational prayer by asking Him one question, and journaling what you feel Him respond (Remember His voice will never contradict His word).
Before each meal, thank God not only for your food but for one specific blessing from your day.
When you face a decision, pause and ask God for wisdom before responding.
Whenever something causes you anxiety, immediately turn it into a prayer instead of carrying it alone.
End your day by thanking God for His faithfulness and reviewing where you noticed His presence.
Rather than only waiting for one long prayer time, make prayer your ongoing conversation with God. Each time a thought, concern, or moment of gratitude comes to mind, simply bring it to your Father. As you practice talking with Him throughout the day, you'll discover that prayer becomes less about finding the right words and more about walking closely with the One who is always listening.
