Devotional
Every one of us is hungry for something.
We pursue success, approval, comfort, security, relationships, entertainment, or achievement, believing they will satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts. Yet no matter how much we accumulate or accomplish, those things can never fully satisfy us. We were created with a hunger that only God can fill.
As we begin these 21 days of prayer and fasting, Jesus invites us to recognize that our greatest need is not physical—it is spiritual. In the Beatitudes, He declares a blessing over those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. This isn't a casual desire or a passing interest. It is the longing of someone who knows they cannot live without God.
Fasting helps reveal what we're truly hungry for. When we willingly give up something that normally satisfies us—whether it's food, social media, or another comfort—we create intentional space to seek the One who satisfies forever. Every craving becomes a reminder to pray. Every empty moment becomes an invitation to draw near to God.
Jesus also reminds us in Matthew 6 that fasting isn't about putting our spirituality on display. It is an act of worship done for an audience of One. Our Father sees what is done in secret, and He delights in meeting with His children.
This journey is not about proving your commitment to God. It is about positioning yourself to experience more of His presence. God isn't impressed by empty rituals, but He responds to hearts that genuinely seek Him.
As you begin today, ask yourself: What am I truly hungry for? Invite the Holy Spirit to redirect your desires so that knowing Christ becomes your greatest pursuit. When we seek Him first, we discover that He alone is enough.
Prayer Prompts
Thank God for inviting you into a deeper relationship with Him.
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any competing desires that have taken first place in your heart.
Pray that God would increase your hunger for His Word, His presence, and His righteousness.
Commit your 21-day journey to the Lord, asking Him to transform your heart—not just your habits.
Pray for your church family as everyone seeks God together during this season.
Journaling Questions
What have I been depending on to satisfy me instead of God?
Why am I choosing to participate in these 21 days of prayer and fasting?
What am I believing God to do in my life, my family, or my church during this season?
What spiritual habit do I most want God to strengthen in me?
What would it look like for me to seek God's Kingdom first each day?
Challenge for the Day
Write down three specific prayers you will consistently bring before God over the next 21 days. Keep them somewhere you'll see them daily, and ask God to shape not only your circumstances but also your heart as you seek Him. Every time you experience hunger or notice the absence of what you're fasting from today, pause and spend one minute thanking God for being the only One who can truly satisfy your soul.
