Day 2: Seek First His Kingdom
Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:25–34
Key Verse: "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." — Matthew 6:33
Devotional
Worry has a way of demanding our attention. Whether it's concern over finances, health, relationships, the future, or simply having enough, anxiety can quietly become the driving force behind our decisions. For some, the worry centers on comfort and luxury. For others, it's the very real concern of meeting basic needs. Yet regardless of our circumstances, Jesus gives us the same loving command: Do not worry.
Jesus isn't dismissing the realities of life or pretending our needs don't exist. Instead, He reminds us that our heavenly Father already knows what we need and faithfully cares for His children. He points to the birds that never store away food and the flowers that never strive for beauty, yet God provides for them with remarkable care. If He is faithful to His creation, how much more will He care for those made in His image?
Worry promises control but delivers exhaustion. It consumes our thoughts without changing our circumstances. Trust, however, frees us to live with peace and purpose. This is why Jesus redirects our focus: "Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness." Our priority is not to chase after the things the world pursues, but to pursue the King Himself.
When we prioritize spiritual disciplines in our lives, we make a conscious and active choice to Seek First the kingdom of God, and His righteousness, believing that he will provide our needs as we keep our priorities in line. Fasting and other spiritual disciplines help us reorder our hearts. Every time we pray instead of panic, fast instead of indulge, or worship instead of worry, we declare that God's kingdom matters more than our comfort or our fears. These holy habits gradually become the natural rhythm of our lives, shaping us into people who trust God more deeply each day.
In an unholy world driven by anxiety, self-sufficiency, and constant striving, seeking God's kingdom first is a powerful act of faith. As we align our hearts with His priorities, we can rest in the confidence that our heavenly Father is both willing and able to provide everything we truly need.
Prayer Prompts
• Thank God for His faithful provision throughout your life, even in seasons when you didn't recognize it at the time.
• Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any worries or fears that have taken priority over trusting God.
• Pray for a heart that seeks God's kingdom before personal comfort, success, or security.
• Surrender your needs, both practical and spiritual, to your heavenly Father, trusting Him to provide in His perfect timing.
• Ask God to help you develop holy habits that strengthen your faith and replace anxiety with peace.
Journaling Questions
1. What worries have been competing for first place in my heart and mind?
2. What does it practically look like for me to seek God's kingdom first in this season of life?
3. How has God faithfully provided for me in the past, and how does remembering His faithfulness strengthen my trust today?
4. Which spiritual discipline (prayer, fasting, Scripture reading, worship, or generosity) can help me replace worry with trust this week?
5. What is one area I need to surrender to God's care today?
Challenge for the Day
Each time you catch yourself worrying today, pause and turn that worry into a prayer. Instead of rehearsing your fears, rehearse God's promises. Before making any significant decision today, ask yourself: "Am I seeking God's kingdom first?" Finish the day by writing down three ways you saw God's faithfulness and provision, no matter how small.
